ITINERARY

​​DAY 1: TOKYO TO DEWA SANZAN VIA NIIGATA

  • Begin your journey by traveling from Tokyo to the sacred Dewa Sanzan region via Niigata. Dewa Sanzan, meaning "Three Mountains of Dewa," is a revered pilgrimage site in Japan. Upon arrival, start exploring the spiritual atmosphere of Haguro-san, the only one of the three mountains accessible year-round. Visit the ancient five-story pagoda and climb the 2,446 stone steps that wind through a cedar forest. Stay overnight in the area to fully immerse yourself in its serene environment.

​​DAY 2: FULL EXPLORATION OF DEWA SANZAN

  • Dedicate the day to exploring Dewa Sanzan's sacred mountains. Visit Haguro-san again to appreciate its historical significance, and learn about the traditions of the Yamabushi ascetic monks. If traveling in summer, consider venturing to Gas-san and Yudono-san, which are accessible only in the warmer months. Marvel at the untouched natural beauty and the profound spiritual energy of the region.

DAY 3: DEWA SANZAN TO ZAO ONSEN

  • Leave Dewa Sanzan early and head to Zao Onsen, a volcanic mountain range famous for its therapeutic hot springs. In winter, enjoy skiing on powdery slopes and admire the snow monsters (frozen trees) that cover the landscape. In summer, explore the lush hiking trails that lead to stunning views. Relax in one of Zao’s sulfur-rich onsens and spend the night in this charming hot spring town.

 

DAY 4: ZAO TO SENDAI VIA YAMADERA

  • Start your day with a visit to Yamadera, a historic temple perched on a cliffside. Climb the 1,015 stone steps to the temple and be rewarded with breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Afterward, continue to Sendai, the largest city in the Tohoku region, known for its vibrant culture and delicious local cuisine. Spend the evening exploring the city and its lively downtown area.

DAY 5: DAY TRIP TO MATSUSHIMA BAY

 

  • Take a short train ride to Matsushima, celebrated as one of Japan’s three most scenic views. Cruise through the bay dotted with over 260 pine-clad islands and visit iconic sites like Zuiganji Temple and Godaido Hall. Consider a side trip to Ishinomaki, a city deeply affected by the 2011 tsunami, to learn about its resilience and recovery efforts. Return to Sendai for the night.

 

DAY 6: SENDAI TO NYUTO ONSENVIA HIRAIZUMI

 

  • Travel to Nyuto Onsen, a rustic hot spring retreat in the Akita Prefecture. Stop in Hiraizumi along the way to explore its UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including Chusonji Temple and Motsuji Temple, known for their exquisite Pure Land gardens. Arrive at Nyuto Onsen in the evening and unwind in its tranquil, open-air hot springs surrounded by nature.

 

DAY 7: NYUTO ONSEN TO LAKE TOWADA

  • Depart Nyuto Onsen for Lake Towada, a breathtaking caldera lake straddling Akita and Aomori Prefectures. If traveling in summer or autumn, take the scenic route through the Hachimantai Mountains. Upon arrival, enjoy a relaxing boat cruise or take a walk along the Oirase Stream, a serene trail lined with waterfalls and lush greenery. Stay overnight near the lake.

 

DAY 8: LAKE TOWADA TO SHIMOKITA PENINSULA

  • In the morning, visit the Towada Art Center, a museum showcasing contemporary art in harmony with the surrounding nature. Continue to the Shimokita Peninsula, the northernmost point of Honshu. Explore the rugged landscape, traditional fishing villages, and the peninsula’s rich cultural heritage.

 

DAY 9: MOUNT OSORE AND DEPARTURE

 

  • Conclude your journey with a visit to Mount Osore (Osorezan), one of Japan’s most sacred sites, believed to be a gateway to the afterlife. Explore its otherworldly volcanic terrain, bubbling sulfur springs, and serene Lake Usori. Afterward, take a ferry to Hokkaido or return to Tokyo by train or plane, bringing an end to your unforgettable journey through Tohoku’s spiritual and scenic treasures.
